The resolution recognizes the 175th anniversary of Wheeling Hospital, the oldest hospital in West Virginia, which was incorporated on March 12, 1850. Founded by Bishop Richard Whelan and Dr. Simon Hullihen, the hospital has a rich history of service, including significant expansions and innovations in patient care over the years. It has played a crucial role in responding to public health crises, such as disease outbreaks and the COVID-19 pandemic, and has supported military efforts during wartime. The hospital has continually evolved, introducing various specialized units and facilities, including the first cardiac catheterization laboratory in the region and a state-of-the-art Emergency/Trauma Center.
The resolution expresses appreciation for the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston's ongoing support and acknowledges the contributions of WVU Medicine to the hospital's operations. It highlights Wheeling Hospital's commitment to providing innovative healthcare solutions for future generations of West Virginians. The Senate also directs that copies of the resolution be sent to Bishop Mark E. Brennan and Mr. Douglass Harrison, the President and CEO of Wheeling Hospital, to commemorate this significant milestone.
