The resolution recognizes the 175th anniversary of Wheeling Hospital, the oldest hospital in West Virginia, which was founded on March 12, 1850, by Bishop Richard Whelan and Dr. Simon Hullihen. The hospital has a rich history of service, including significant expansions to accommodate growing patient needs, and has played a vital role in public health crises and wartime efforts. Over the years, Wheeling Hospital has introduced numerous innovative healthcare services, including the establishment of specialized units and facilities, and has recently become a full member of the West Virginia University Health System while maintaining its Catholic identity.
The Senate expresses its appreciation for the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston's ongoing support and the contributions of WVU Medicine to the hospital's success. The resolution highlights the hospital's commitment to providing quality healthcare and its readiness for future growth, ensuring that it will continue to serve the community for generations to come. A copy of the resolution will be forwarded to Bishop Mark E. Brennan and Mr. Douglass Harrison, the President and CEO of Wheeling Hospital, to acknowledge their roles in the hospital's legacy.
