This bill amends the Code of West Virginia to establish a specific timeframe for the educational instructional term for students. It mandates that the school year must begin no earlier than the Tuesday after Labor Day and conclude no later than the Friday before Memorial Day, starting from the school year 2025-2026. This change aims to provide a standardized schedule for the school calendar, ensuring that students have a consistent and predictable academic year.

In addition to the new scheduling requirements, the bill retains existing provisions regarding instructional days, employment terms for educators, and the criteria for instructional time. It emphasizes the importance of maintaining at least one hundred eighty instructional days while allowing for flexibility in the event of school closures due to inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances. The county boards are also required to develop policies to recover lost instructional time and to engage with the community in the formulation of the school calendar.
