This bill amends West Virginia Code ยง20-2-5j to allow hunters to track mortally wounded deer, elk, turkey, wild boar, or bear using not only leashed dogs but also dogs that are remotely controlled by an electric dog collar. The bill specifies that hunters must maintain physical control of the dogs, which now includes the use of an electric remote-controlled collar. Additionally, it clarifies that tracking with these dogs is considered hunting, and both the hunter and the dog handler must adhere to all relevant laws and regulations.
Furthermore, the bill stipulates that it is unlawful for hunters or dog handlers to track these animals unless they possess a valid hunting license or are exempt from licensing requirements. The hunter must accompany the dog handler, but if the hunter is physically unable to do so, they may designate the handler to kill the mortally wounded animal once located. The animal will count towards the bag limit of the hunter who initially shot it. Lastly, any dog handler providing tracking services for profit must be licensed as an outfitter or guide.
