SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 33(By Senators Caputo, Oliverio, Taylor, Hamilton, Grady, and Phillips)[Introduced February 28, 2024] Requesting the Division of Highways to erect two supplemental signs along each side of Interstate 79 below existing signage at the northern and southern entry points of Marion County, the first pair of signs at the border of Marion and Monongalia counties around mile marker 142.5, the second pair of signs at the border of Marion and Harrison counties around mile marker 129.5 proclaiming "Home of Legendary Coach - Nick Saban".Whereas, Nicholas Lou Saban Jr. was born October 31, 1951, in Monongah, West Virginia, the son of Mary and Nick Lou Saban Sr.;Whereas, Nick Saban attended Monongah High School, serving as class vice-president and lettering in baseball, basketball, and football, playing quarterback for its 1968 and 1969 Class A State Championship football teams;Whereas, Nick Saban served as a football coach for nearly 50 years, both at the collegiate and professional levels, including time at 10 different colleges and universities and three different National Football League teams, earning him the SEC Coach of the Year Award five times and 16 other collegiate Coach of the Year Awards from other prestigious football organizations;Whereas, Nick Saban went on to coach football teams at the University of Alabama and Louisiana State University to a combined seven National Championships, the teams of Louisiana State University and the University of Alabama to 11 total Southeastern Conference titles, the University of Toledo to a Mid-American Conference title, and earned an 292-71-1 overall winning career record as a head football coach;Whereas, Nick Saban coached 17 seasons at the University of Alabama from 2007 until his retirement in 2023, culminating in 23 bowl game appearances with 16 victories, 10 SEC West titles, 9 SEC championships, and 6 national championships, as well as coaching 4 Heisman Award winners and 47 Consensus All-Americans;Whereas, in 1998, Nick Saban and his wife, Terry, founded and continue to invest their time in their charity, Nick's Kids, to promote and support children, families, and educational causes across the nation, distributing over $11 million to hundreds of organizations;Whereas, Nick and Terry Saban serve the state of West Virginia through various charitable contributions and partnerships, such as Fairmont State University's Kerry Marbury Memorial Scholarship, $13,000 for the renovation of North Marion High School's weight room, and many more donations to schools across the state;Whereas, lt is most fitting that the West Virginia Legislature pay tribute to the accomplishments of Nick Saban; therefore, be it Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:That the Division of Highways is hereby requested to erect two supplemental signs along each side of Interstate 79 below existing signage at the northern and southern entry points of Marion County, the first pair of signs at the border of Marion and Monongalia counties around mile marker 142.5, the second pair of signs at the border of Marion and Harrison counties around mile marker 129.5 proclaiming "Home of Legendary Coach - Nick Saban"; and, be itFurther Resolved, That the Senate extends its sincere gratitude to Nick Saban for his contributions to the state of West Virginia and to the sport of football; and, be itFurther Resolved, That the Clerk of the Senate is hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the Commissioner of the Division of Highways.
