SENATE RESOLUTION 44(By Senators Hamilton, Woelfel, and Caputo)[Introduced February 16, 2024] Designating Monday, February 19, 2024, as Pancreatic Cancer Day at the Legislature.Whereas, In the United States, an estimated 66,440 people will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, which equates to 181 people every single day; andWhereas, Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest cancers, and is currently the third leading cause of a cancer death.  It is predicted to become the second leading cause of death by 2030; andWhereas, Pancreatic cancer is the seventh most common cause of cancer related deaths across the world.  In West Virginia, approximately 350 pancreatic cancer patients will die in 2024; andWhereas, Pancreatic cancer symptoms present themselves generally in the later stages of the disease and 73 percent of patients will die within the first year of their diagnosis, while 87 percent of pancreatic cancer patients die within the first five years; andWhereas, This disease is not discriminatory, and has claimed the lives of well-known people, such as former West Virginia Governor William Marland, actor Patrick Swayze, Super Bowl MVP Harley Martin, and the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, and as well as many of our loved ones; andWhereas, A pancreatic cancer diagnosis carries a five-year relative survival rate.  According to the American Cancer Society the five-year survival rate has increased up to 13 percent, marking a consecutive increase since 2021; and Whereas, Overall, the cancer incidence and cancer rates are declining, the incidence of pancreatic cancer and death rate has been increasing, and projections are that it will increase by 55 percent by 2030; therefore, be itResolved by the Senate:That the Senate hereby designates Monday, February 19, 2024, as Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day at the Legislature; and, be itFurther Resolved, That the Clerk is hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to Annette Fetty-Santelli, Community Advocate for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
