Senate CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 26(By Senators Deeds and Jeffries)[Introduced February 1, 2024] Requesting the Division of Highways name a portion of County Route 20/Spring Creek Station Road, in Greenbrier County, the "U.S. Army PFC Clarence William (Buck) Holliday Memorial Road".Whereas, PFC Holliday was born in Spring Creek in Greenbrier County on August 30, 1923. He was the seventh of nine children born to Clarence and Cora Holliday; andWhereas, PFC Holliday entered the United States Army on April 18, 1944, and completed his Basic Training at Fort Blanding, Florida; andWhereas, PFC Holliday was deployed to the European Theater as part of the 104th Infantry Division, leaving the United States on October 5, 1944, and landing in Scotland on October 13, 1944; andWhereas, He traveled through Scotland, England, and France, arriving in Belgium on November 5, 1944, where the fighting was fierce; andWhereas, As a member of the 104th Infantry Division, PFC Holliday was likely involved in the battles of Hurtgen Forest, which took place from September through December of 1944; andWhereas, on November 23, 1944, Thanksgiving Day, at 21 years of age, Private Holliday was shot down by German machine gun fire. He is buried in the Staunton National Cemetery in Staunton, Virginia; andWhereas, It is fitting that an enduring memorial be established to commemorate U.S. Army PFC Clarence William (‘Buck’) Holliday and his contributions to our state and country; therefore, be it Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:That the Division of Highways is hereby requested to name a portion of County Route 20/Spring Creek Station Road, in Greenbrier County, the "U.S. Army PFC Clarence William (‘Buck’) Holliday Memorial Road"; and, be it Further Resolved, That the Division of Highways is hereby requested to have made and be placed signs at both ends identifying the portion of road as the "U.S. Army PFC Class Clarence William (‘Buck’) Holliday Memorial Road"; and, be itFurther Resolved, That the Clerk of the Senate is hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the Commissioner of the Division of Highways.
