The Wisconsin Legislature has introduced Senate Joint Resolution 83 to recognize November 10, 2025, as the 50th anniversary of the tragic sinking of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald. Launched in 1958, the Edmund Fitzgerald was the largest ship on the Great Lakes for 13 years and tragically sank during a storm on November 10, 1975, while carrying iron ore from Superior, Wisconsin, to Zug Island, Michigan. The vessel encountered severe weather conditions, leading to its last transmission from Captain Ernest McSorley before disappearing from radar. All 29 crew members aboard, including eight from Wisconsin, lost their lives in the disaster.

The resolution honors the memory of the crew and acknowledges the ongoing impact of their loss on family and friends. It also pays tribute to the bravery of those who continue to serve in the Great Lakes maritime industry, recognizing the risks they face in their profession. The resolution has been introduced by a bipartisan group of senators and representatives and has been referred to the Committee on Senate Organization for further consideration.
