The Wisconsin Legislature has introduced Senate Joint Resolution 83 to recognize November 10, 2025, as the 50th anniversary of the tragic sinking of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald. The resolution honors the memory of the 29 crew members who lost their lives when the ship sank during a violent storm on Lake Superior on that date in 1975. The Edmund Fitzgerald, which was the largest ship on the Great Lakes for 13 years, was carrying iron ore from Superior, Wisconsin, to Zug Island, Michigan, when it encountered severe weather conditions that led to its demise.

The resolution highlights the bravery of the crew and acknowledges the ongoing impact of this tragedy on the families and friends of the victims, particularly noting that eight of the crew members were residents of Wisconsin. It also pays tribute to the continued service of individuals in the Great Lakes maritime industry, recognizing their courage in the face of danger. The resolution has been introduced by a bipartisan group of senators and representatives and has been referred to the Committee on Senate Organization for further consideration.
