Senate Bill 246 proposes the addition of April 24 as Armenian Genocide Awareness Day to the list of special observance days recognized in Wisconsin schools. This new observance day will be included in the existing framework that currently recognizes 22 special observance days, such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and Veterans Day. The bill stipulates that schools must appropriately observe this day when school is in session, or on the nearest school day if it falls on a weekend.

The bill creates a new statute, 118.02 (7d), which specifically designates April 24 as Armenian Genocide Awareness Day, aligning it with Genocide Awareness Month. The provisions of this act will first apply to the school year that begins after the effective date of the legislation.
