Senate Bill 53 mandates the display of the national motto, "In God We Trust," in public buildings and schools across Wisconsin. Within six months of the bill's effective date, all public buildings must display the motto in a visible location if open to the public, or in an area where employee notices are posted if not open to the public. The display must be at least 11 inches by 14 inches, presented on a poster, framed document, or inscribed on a wall, and must be in English using a legible font.
Starting in the 2026-27 school year, each public school classroom, including charter schools, is also required to display the national motto. The bill amends existing statutes to include the national motto alongside the display of the U.S. flag and the pledge of allegiance. The school boards and governing bodies are tasked with determining the nature of the display while ensuring it meets the same size and presentation requirements as those for public buildings.
