1 Relating to: designating July 2023 as Disability Pride Month in Wisconsin.
2 Whereas, disability is a natural part of human life and human diversity that
3 should not compromise a person's fundamental right to independence,
4 self-determination, or participation in public life; and
5 Whereas, the disabled community is the world's largest minority, making up an
6 estimated 15 percent of the world's population, including 61 million Americans and
7 more than 300,000 Wisconsinites; and
8 Whereas, disability intersects with many other identities, including race,
9 gender, and socioeconomic status, and touches every aspect of daily life, from health
10 care and housing to education and environmental justice; and
11 Whereas, disability is itself an extremely diverse identity, including physical
12 disabilities, neurodivergence, invisible and undiagnosed disabilities, psychiatric
13 disabilities, and sensory disabilities; and
14 Whereas, disabled activists have fought long and hard to break down barriers
15 to inclusion but nonetheless continue to face discrimination, segregation, and

1 inaccessible environments that prevent them from living fully and equitably in their
2 communities; and
3 Whereas, the Americans with Disabilities Act, which prohibits discrimination
4 on the basis of disability status and has helped ensure disabled people can access the
5 accommodations they need, was signed into law on July 26, 1990; and
6 Whereas, during the month of July, we celebrate the value, contributions, and
7 diverse life experiences of disabled Wisconsinites and reaffirm our commitment to
8 build a more equitable and inclusive state for all; now therefore, be it
9 Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the Wisconsin
10 Legislature designates July 2023 as Disability Pride Month in Wisconsin.
