The resolution honors the life and legacy of Natalie Naomi Phelps, a dedicated educator and advocate for cancer awareness, who passed away on November 10, 2025, at the age of 42 due to cancer-related complications. Raised in Washington state, Natalie had a distinguished educational background, earning degrees from Whitman College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She taught in various countries, including Italy, Jordan, Egypt, and Qatar, before returning to Bainbridge Island, where she made a significant impact on her students and colleagues.
After being diagnosed with stage IV colorectal cancer in early 2020, shortly after the birth of her second child, Natalie became a passionate advocate for early detection and cancer research funding. She served as co-chair of the Seattle Walk to End Colon Cancer and was involved with the Colorectal Cancer Care Alliance, sharing her message widely through media outlets. The resolution expresses deep sympathy to her family, including her husband, children, and brother, while recognizing her contributions to education and her unwavering commitment to improving the lives of others.
