This bill addresses the use of paraquat, a herbicide linked to an increased risk of Parkinson's disease, particularly among agricultural workers and rural communities in Washington. The legislature recognizes the significant health, economic, and caregiving burdens imposed by Parkinson's disease and highlights the need to protect public health by reducing exposure to harmful chemicals. The bill emphasizes the availability of alternative weed management practices that can effectively manage crops while minimizing health risks associated with chemical agents.

To this end, the bill prohibits the use, sale, distribution, application, or handling of any herbicide containing paraquat, with the exception of limited use authorized by the director for research purposes under strict safety protocols. The director is also empowered to adopt rules for the implementation and enforcement of this prohibition. The act is set to take effect on January 1, 2027.
