The bill establishes a new section in chapter 43.70 RCW to implement comprehensive cancer education programs for students in grades six through 12 in Washington State. The Department of Health will contract with a training entity to deliver these age-appropriate programs, which will cover topics such as cancer prevention, risk reduction, and available social and emotional resources. School districts will have the option to voluntarily participate and determine which grades to include. The programs are designed to fit within the typical class period of 50 to 75 minutes and should align with existing health curricula. The training entity selected must have a proven track record in delivering effective cancer education programs to youth.
Additionally, the bill outlines requirements for the training entity, including the use of funds to enhance and expand the program's reach, ensuring diversity among participants, and providing programs in Spanish. The training entity may also subcontract with other organizations to meet demand. By December 1, 2027, the Department of Health is required to report to the governor and legislature on the program's implementation, including details on the number of programs delivered, student participation, and recommendations for future improvements.
