The Washington State House of Representatives has introduced a resolution honoring Hollywood screenwriter Tab Murphy, who was raised in Olympia and graduated from Olympia High School in 1975. Murphy's early experiences in the area, including serving as a senate page and attending a "Bigfoot Rally," sparked his lifelong passion for storytelling and film. After attending Washington State University and transferring to the University of Southern California's Film School, he pursued a career in screenwriting, eventually breaking into the industry in 1983. His significant achievements include writing the Academy Award-nominated screenplay for "Gorillas in the Mist" and directing "Last of the Dogmen," as well as contributing to several animated features for The Walt Disney Company.
Throughout his career, Murphy has received numerous accolades, including an Emmy nomination in 2023 for a Netflix nature documentary titled "Kangaroo Valley." His work has not only entertained audiences but has also highlighted important cultural themes, such as Native American history and environmental conservation. The resolution recognizes Murphy's contributions to the film industry and celebrates the joy his work brings to both children and adults.
