The bill amends RCW 28A.320.126 to enhance emergency response systems in public schools by requiring school districts to collaborate with local law enforcement, public safety answering points, and safety and security staff to develop effective emergency response protocols. The bill defines "emergency response system" to include various technological measures such as panic or alert buttons, live video and audio feeds, remote door access, and interactive communications, all aimed at improving the response to threats or emergencies in schools.
Additionally, the bill mandates that each school district submit a progress report on the implementation of these emergency response systems to the office of the superintendent of public instruction by October 1, 2025. By December 1, 2025, the office is required to compile this information and report to the legislature on the types of systems being utilized. The bill also clarifies that these provisions apply to charter schools and state-tribal education compact schools. The act is officially titled "Alyssa's law."
