The Washington State Senate has adopted a resolution recognizing the shared commitment to democracy, human rights, and the rule of law between the people of Washington state and Ukraine. The resolution highlights the significant Ukrainian heritage within Washington, noting that over 80,000 individuals of Ukrainian descent reside in the state, many of whom fled Soviet persecution. Since the onset of the Russian invasion in February 2022, Washington has welcomed over 20,000 Ukrainians, who have made valuable contributions across various sectors, including agriculture, business, and the arts.
In light of the ongoing conflict, which has resulted in a humanitarian crisis and significant loss of life, the resolution condemns Russia's unprovoked aggression against Ukraine and expresses deep sympathy for Ukrainian Americans, particularly those with family members affected by the war. The Senate reaffirms its support for peace and diplomacy, commending the courage and resilience of the Ukrainian people in their fight for sovereignty and democracy. The resolution serves to strengthen the bond between Washington state and Ukraine, emphasizing solidarity and support for Ukrainian citizens both locally and internationally.
