This bill introduces new insurance requirements for firearm owners in Washington State. It mandates that individuals who own firearms must obtain and maintain a residential dwelling policy that covers losses or damages resulting from accidental or unintentional discharge of the firearm, including injury to non-insured persons and property damage. Additionally, firearm owners are required to keep valid written evidence of this insurance readily available at the location where the firearms are stored.
The bill also establishes obligations for surplus line brokers and insurance producers when selling or renewing residential dwelling policies. They must inquire if any named insureds own firearms and whether those firearms are securely stored. If the answer is affirmative, they are required to inform the insured about the new insurance requirements. The bill defines "securely stored" as firearms being kept in a locking gun safe or secured with a trigger lock. The act is set to take effect on January 1, 2025.
