The House of Representatives of Vermont has passed a concurrent resolution congratulating Stephen R. Bissette on being named the sixth Vermont Cartoonist Laureate. This designation is part of a unique collaboration between the Center for Cartoon Studies and the Vermont Arts Council, aimed at promoting comics as a significant artistic medium. Bissette, a Windsor resident and a graduate of Harwood Union High School, has had a distinguished career in the comic book industry, known for his contributions to the horror genre and for co-creating the iconic character John Constantine in the "Saga of the Swamp Thing" series.
Bissette's extensive body of work includes notable projects such as the dinosaur epic "Tyrant," adaptations of films into graphic novels, and contributions to the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" franchise. He has also played a pivotal role in independent comic book publishing through the influential "Taboo" anthology. His achievements have earned him several prestigious awards, including the Jack Kirby Comics Industry Awards and the Eisner Award. The resolution not only recognizes Bissette's artistic accomplishments but also directs the Secretary of State to send copies of the resolution to him, the Center for Cartoon Studies, and the Vermont Arts Council.
