The resolution honors the memory of Stuart Alan Hurd, the long-serving Town Manager of Bennington, who passed away at the age of 77 on August 30, 2025, after a four-year battle with cancer. Hurd's career in municipal public service spanned over fifty years, beginning when he was hired as the community's first zoning administrator in 1973. His effective leadership led to his promotion to assistant town manager and ultimately to town manager in 1992, a position he held for nearly 33 years. Hurd was recognized for his dedication to the community, receiving the Vermont Municipal Service Award in 2008, and was involved in various local organizations and activities outside of his professional life.
In recognition of his contributions, the Town of Bennington honored Hurd by flying flags at half-mast for five days, symbolizing each decade of his service. The resolution expresses the General Assembly's condolences to Hurd's family and colleagues and directs the Secretary of State to send a copy of the resolution to his family and the Town of Bennington.
