The Joint Resolution J.R.S. 37, offered by Senators Morley and Baruth, expresses the State of Vermont's support for the introduction of gender equality in Nordic combined Olympic competition. Nordic combined, a demanding winter sport that combines Nordic skiing and alpine ski jumping, has a long history dating back to its first competition in 1892. However, despite its rich tradition, women have been excluded from Olympic events, a situation that has persisted even as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has acknowledged the importance of gender equality in sports. Notably, Vermonter Tara Geraghty-Moats has excelled in non-Olympic Nordic combined competitions but was compelled to pursue biathlon due to the lack of opportunities in her preferred sport.

The resolution highlights the urgent need for the IOC to rectify this exclusion, especially as the 2026 Winter Olympics approach, where women will still not be included in Nordic combined events. The General Assembly calls for solidarity with national and international ski organizations and athletes advocating for gender equality in the sport. Furthermore, the resolution directs the Secretary of State to send copies to relevant organizations, including the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) and the IOC, to emphasize Vermont's commitment to promoting gender equality in Nordic combined competition.
