The House concurrent resolution No. R-196 congratulates Shirley Young Cooper on her 100th birthday, which she celebrated on November 4, 2025. A lifelong resident of Springfield, Vermont, Shirley was born into a family that owned Youngs Furniture and Appliances. She grew up in a bustling household as one of seven siblings, with four of her brothers serving in World War II. During the war, she contributed to the home front by working at Jones and Lamson and volunteering with the University of Vermont Extension service. Shirley's family includes her daughter Deanna, three grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to her contributions during the war, Shirley has been an active member of her community, serving as a poll worker and volunteering for the Red Cross, where she became known for her special sandwiches. She has also been involved in her local church, singing in the choir and leading the women's group. An avid skier until the age of 70, she continued to knit mittens for local children until recently. The resolution not only honors her remarkable life and contributions but also directs the Secretary of State to send copies of the resolution to Shirley and her family.
