The House of Representatives of Vermont has passed a concurrent resolution honoring Melvin and Susan Coburn for their nearly 50 years of dedicated ownership of Coburns General Store in South Strafford. The store, a cherished community hub since the 1880s, provided a wide range of services beyond retail, including banking, a gas station, and postal services, while also supporting local events and organizations. The Coburns, known for their kindness and community spirit, have decided to step back from their daily operations, prompting a community effort to ensure the store's future.
In response to the Coburns' desire to sell the store, the Strafford Community Trust successfully led a fundraising campaign that raised $1.8 million to purchase Coburns General Store. This initiative reflects a nonprofit model of ownership that has been effective in other Vermont communities, ensuring the store's continued operation under new management. The resolution not only honors the Coburns for their long-standing service but also congratulates the Strafford Community Trust for its successful efforts to preserve this historic establishment. The Secretary of State is directed to send copies of the resolution to the Coburn family, the Strafford Community Trust, and the store.
