The resolution commemorates the bicentennial of the Marquis de Lafayette's Farewell American tour, which took place from 1824 to 1825. Lafayette, a French aristocrat and major general in the Continental Army, played a significant role in the American Revolutionary War, including his participation in key battles and his efforts to secure French support for the American cause. In 1824, he was invited by President James Monroe and Congress to tour the United States in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Revolutionary War, culminating in a journey through 24 states.

During his visit to Vermont in June 1825, Lafayette was warmly welcomed with ceremonies and events in various towns, including Windsor, Woodstock, and Montpelier, where he delivered a speech and attended a grand banquet. His tour concluded in Burlington, where he gave a farewell speech expressing his appreciation for the nation he helped secure independence for. The resolution also notes that the American Friends of Lafayette will organize a bicentennial recreation of this historic tour, following the original route on June 28-29, 2025. The General Assembly has resolved to commemorate this significant event and will send a copy of the resolution to the American Friends of Lafayette.
