The House concurrent resolution No. R-154 commemorates the bicentennial of the Marquis de Lafayette's Farewell American tour, which took place from 1824 to 1825. Lafayette, a French aristocrat and major general in the Continental Army, played a significant role in the American Revolutionary War, including his participation in key battles and his efforts to secure French support for the American cause. In 1824, he was invited by President James Monroe and Congress to tour the United States to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Revolutionary War, culminating in a journey through 24 states.
During his visit to Vermont, Lafayette was warmly welcomed at various ceremonies and events, including a military procession and a grand banquet in Montpelier. His tour concluded in Burlington on June 29, 1825, with significant festivities, including the laying of the cornerstone for the University of Vermont's Old Mill building and his farewell speech. The resolution also notes that the American Friends of Lafayette will organize a bicentennial recreation of the original tour, following Lafayette's route through Vermont on June 28-29, 2025. The General Assembly expresses its intent to commemorate this historic event and directs the Secretary of State to send a copy of the resolution to the American Friends of Lafayette.
