The House concurrent resolution No. R-148 celebrates the 160th anniversary of the Bennington Free Library (BFL), recognizing its significant role in enhancing the civic, cultural, and educational life of the Bennington community. Established on June 23, 1865, the library has evolved from its humble beginnings with a collection of 1,800 books to a modern institution that now boasts a diverse collection of 55,000 items, including books, periodicals, DVDs, and even snowshoes and a telescope. The resolution highlights the library's commitment to lifelong learning and literacy, as well as its efforts to adapt to changing times, such as transitioning to digital systems and eliminating late fines and membership fees to encourage broader access.

The resolution is sponsored by several representatives and senators from the Bennington area and emphasizes the library's rich history, including its various relocations and expansions to accommodate growing patronage. It acknowledges the leadership of the library's current director, Wendy M. Sharkey, and the wide range of services offered to the community, such as book delivery for homebound patrons and public programs. The General Assembly expresses its congratulations to the BFL on this milestone and directs the Secretary of State to send a copy of the resolution to the library.
