The House Concurrent Resolution congratulates the Bennington Free Library (BFL) on its 160th anniversary, recognizing its significant role in enhancing the civic, cultural, and educational life of the Bennington community. Established on June 23, 1865, the library has evolved from its humble beginnings with a collection of 1,800 books to a modern institution that now boasts a diverse collection of 55,000 items, including books, periodicals, DVDs, and even snowshoes and a telescope. The resolution highlights the library's commitment to lifelong learning and literacy, as well as its transition to digital services and the elimination of borrowing fees to encourage greater access for all community members.
The resolution also reflects on the library's rich history, including its various relocations and expansions to accommodate growing patronage, and the leadership of its librarians over the years. It acknowledges the library's innovative services, such as book delivery for homebound patrons and public programs, all under the guidance of its current librarian, Wendy M. Sharkey. The General Assembly expresses its congratulations and directs the Secretary of State to send a copy of the resolution to the Bennington Free Library, celebrating its longstanding contribution to the community.
