The resolution designates May 18, 2025, as Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Highway Day in Vermont, commemorating the significant contributions of Vermonters during the American Civil War, where over 34,000 fought for the Union and more than 5,000 lost their lives. The GAR, established in 1866 by veterans, played a crucial role in the creation of Memorial Day and had a notable presence in Vermont with 116 posts, including GAR Post No. 10 in Cambridge. A monument erected by the Women's Relief Corps in 1918 honors the sacrifices of these soldiers along the road through Cambridge village.
The resolution also highlights the historical significance of Vermont's GAR-designated highway, Route No. 15, which was established in 1937 and remains unique as it is not part of U.S. Route 6. In recognition of the 160th anniversary of the Civil War's conclusion, the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War will encourage community events to honor the legacy of these veterans. A new roadside historical marker will be dedicated on May 18, 2025, in Cambridge to further educate the public about the GAR and the highway's name. The resolution directs the Secretary of State to send copies to relevant organizations, including the Commander-in-Chief of the Sons of Union Veterans and the Cambridge Historical Society.
