The resolution designates May 18, 2025, as Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Highway Day in Vermont, honoring the significant contributions of Vermonters during the American Civil War. Over 34,000 Vermonters fought for the Union, with more than 5,000 losing their lives. The GAR, established in 1866 by veterans, played a crucial role in the creation of Memorial Day and had a strong presence in Vermont, with 116 posts statewide. A notable monument was erected in Cambridge village in 1918 to commemorate the sacrifices of these soldiers.

The resolution also highlights the historical significance of Vermont's GAR-designated highway, Route No. 15, which was established in 1937 and remains unique as it is not part of U.S. Route 6. The year 2025 marks the 160th anniversary of the Civil War's conclusion, prompting the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War to encourage community events honoring the sacrifices of their ancestors. A new roadside historical marker will be dedicated on May 18, 2025, in Cambridge to further commemorate the GAR and the highway's name. The resolution directs the Secretary of State to send copies to relevant organizations, including the Commander-in-Chief of the Sons of Union Veterans and the Cambridge Historical Society.
