The Vermont House of Representatives has introduced a resolution expressing strong objection to the arrest and detention of Mohsen Mahdawi, a long-time U.S. permanent resident. On April 14, 2025, Mahdawi was apprehended by armed immigration authorities at the Colchester immigration office, where he believed he was attending a final interview for U.S. citizenship. The resolution highlights the troubling circumstances of his arrest, including the lack of information provided to him regarding his detention.
In response to this incident, Vermont's federal legislators, including Senators Sanders and Welch and Representative Balint, have condemned the actions of the immigration authorities as immoral and illegal. The resolution calls for Mahdawi to be granted due process and released immediately from detention. Additionally, it directs the Clerk of the House to send copies of the resolution to key officials, including the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security and the Acting Director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, as well as the Vermont Congressional Delegation.
