The resolution honors the Vermonters involved in the creation of the Tony Award-winning musical "Hadestown," which was originally developed by Anas Mitchell shortly after her graduation from Middlebury College in 2004. The musical, a modern adaptation of the Greek myth of Orpheus, premiered in Barre in 2006 and underwent significant revisions before its successful Broadway debut in 2019, where it garnered eight Tony Awards. The resolution highlights the contributions of various Vermont artists, including Anas Mitchell, Michael Chorney, and Ben T. Matchstick, as well as the ongoing involvement of local musicians like Robinson Morse.
Additionally, the resolution recognizes the collaborative efforts of Montpelier High School and U-32 Middle and High School in staging a teen version of "Hadestown" in 2024-2025. Under the leadership of theater directors Maren Langdon Spillane and Erin Galligan-Baldwin, students from both schools participated in this theatrical project, with guidance from the original creators. The General Assembly expresses its appreciation for the artistic achievements of these Vermonters and their role in fostering youth engagement in the performing arts, directing the Secretary of State to send a copy of the resolution to Maren Langdon Spillane and Montpelier High School.
