Offered by: House Committee on Agriculture, Food Resiliency, and Forestry Offered by: Senate Committee on Agriculture Whereas, the biblical concept of gleaning—allowing those in need of sustenance to
gather the remnants of crops from harvested fields—has 21st-century agricultural and food security relevance, and Whereas, a leading proponent and implementer of modern gleaning is Theresa Snow, a
2001 graduate of Sterling College, and she sharpened her farming knowledge while employed at Pete’s Greens, the notable agricultural enterprise in Craftsbury, and Whereas, in 2004, with the goal of teaching Vermonters about food, Theresa Snow piloted a gleaning project at Pete’s Greens, and Whereas, in 2005, under the fiscal umbrella of the Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont, she cofounded Salvation Farms “to reduce food loss on farms,
increase the use of locally grown foods” and to “build increased resilience in Vermont’s food system through agricultural surplus management,” and Whereas, while leading Salvation Farms, Theresa Snow was instrumental in
establishing the following: the Vermont Commodity Program, a distributor of gleaned food crops to “charitable or institutional food sites”; a low-risk-offender gleaning project at the Southeast State Correctional Facility; the Pick for Your Neighbor orchard initiative in collaboration with the Vermont Food Bank; and a workforce development program for categories of persons who would experience difficulties securing employment, and she spearheaded the formation of the Vermont Gleaning Collective, and Whereas, Theresa Snow was a founding member of the national organization known as
the Association of Gleaning Organizations, and is a recipient of both the Vermont Businesses for Social Responsibility’s Young Changemaker Award and the Ben & Jerry’s Local Hero Award, and, in 2024, she is concluding her duties as Salvation Farms Executive Director, now therefore be it Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:
That the General Assembly honors Theresa Snow for her leadership in the promotion of agricultural gleaning in Vermont, and be it further Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to
Theresa Snow.
