Association, was a much admired and resourceful staff member at the Vermont Veterans’
Home (the Home) in Bennington, and Whereas, on October 27, 1976, she started her lifetime employment at the Home as an institutional orderly, and, beginning in 1978, in recognition of her strong work ethic,
compassionate caring for the residents, and attitude of service above self, she was assigned increasingly important responsibilities in the activities department; and, in 1986, she became its supervisor, a post she held with pride until March 24, 2024, the balance of her
47-plus-year career, and Whereas, as a longtime and active member of the American Legion Post #13 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Michele Burgess was the ideal person to serve as the Home’s liaison with the veterans’ service organizations that support the Home’s residents, and Whereas, Michele Burgess’s creativity, enabled the breadth of activities offered to the residents to be broadened, and they now include onsite events such as arts programs, bingo,
exercise sessions, music groups, off-site trips to Lake Shaftsbury and Lake George, and special occasions, such as the Elks’ dinner, the ladies’ tea hour, and fishing derbies, and Whereas, her initiative resulted in new support services, for example, providing golf carts—with which, as an avid golfer, she is familiar—to improve the residents’ mobility,
and Whereas, Michele Burgess earned a wonderful place in the lives of the Home’s residents, and her departure truly marks a farewell to a special friend, now therefore be it Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:
That the General Assembly honors Michele Burgess for her 47-plus years of outstanding and supportive service at the Vermont Veterans’ Home, and be it further Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to
Michele Burgess.
