Whereas, Jules Rabin was born in Boston on April 6, 1924, the youngest of five children of immigrant parents from the current day Belarus and Lithuania, and, for most of the last
56 years, he has resided on Hollister Hill in Marshfield and Whereas, growing up during the Great Depression, he assisted in the operation of his family’s small retail store, and this personal economic experience influenced the evolvement of his passionately held radical political perspectives, and Whereas, he attended the Boston Latin School, Harvard University, and graduate school at Columbia University; is a World War II U.S. Army veteran; and met his wife, Helen, in New York City’s Greenwich Village, and Whereas, for nearly a year, Jules Rabin participated in one of the Committee for Nonviolent Action’s peace walks, proceeding from San Francisco, California to Moscow,
Russia, promoting nonviolence and unilateral nuclear disarmament, and Whereas, beginning in 1968, and for a total of nine years, Jules Rabin taught anthropology at Goddard College in Plainfield; and, after leaving his teaching post, he and his wife established Upland Bakers; and for 35 years they produced sourdough bread in a wood-fired oven they had personally constructed, thus becoming pioneers in the renaissance of local bread-baking in Vermont, and Whereas, peace activism has been a major focus of both Jules and Helen Rabin’s lives,
as proponents of a just reconciliation between Arabs and Jews in the Middle East, as volunteers in Bread and Puppet performances for peace, and as organizers for many years of weekly peace vigils in Montpelier; and, through these activities, they have introduced scores of Vermonters to nonviolent action in the pursuit of a more just and peaceful world,
and Whereas, in recent years, Jules Rabin has split wood, gardened (even if less extensively than during his younger years), enjoyed reading, written the occasional essay, and visited with his children, grandchildren, and friends, now therefore be it Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:
That the General Assembly congratulates the educator, baker, peace activist, and writer Jules Rabin of Marshfield on his 100th birthday, and be it further Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to
Jules Rabin.
