No. R-197. Senate concurrent resolution commemorating the 175th anniversary of
the chartering of the National Life Insurance Company.
(S.C.R.9)
By Senator Cummings, Perchlik, and Watson,
By Representative Casey of Montpelier and McCann of Montpelier,
Whereas, the future importance of the National Life Insurance Company was demonstrated on November 13, 1848, when Governor Carlos Coolidge vetoed the first bill chartering the corporation because the measure lacked a legislative amendment or repeal clause, and on the same date, the General Assembly adopted a corrected measure (Act 22),
which the governor signed immediately, and Whereas, the National Life Insurance Company (today operating as the National Life Group) was established for “making insurance on single lives, joint lives and survivorship,
and for making revisionary payments,” and Whereas, among the distinguished original incorporators were the American statesman Henry Clay and former Maine Governor Robert P. Dunlap, and Whereas, on January 17, 1850, the original National Life policy was written on behalf of Daniel Baldwin, and the beneficiaries of Rowland Allen were recipients of the company’s first payment, and Whereas, the National Life Insurance Company “inspire[s] others to do their best,” a theme that was ably demonstrated in July 2023 after the devastating Vermont flood, when the company hosted a telethon that raised contributions exceeding $1.7 million, including
a $750,000 National Life donation, and Whereas, in 2024, the National Life Insurance Company conducts business in every state, is a Fortune 1000 company, employs over 700 Vermonters, and serves over one million customers, now therefore be it Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:
That the General Assembly commemorates the 175th anniversary of the chartering of
the National Life Insurance Company, and be it further Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to
National Life Group Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Matt Frazee.
