Offered by: Representatives Holcombe of Norwich and Masland of Thetford Offered by: Senators Clarkson, McCormack, and White Whereas, for many years, numerous children in the Upper Valley would eagerly anticipate their annual visit with Santa Claus in the person of Jack Candon, who enthusiastically and joyfully portrayed Saint Nick, and Whereas, in real life, Jack Candon was a respected attorney, legislator, and civic leader who sought to better the lives of all Vermonters, and Whereas, a native of Rutland, he graduated from Mount St. Joseph Academy, the University of Notre Dame, and Marquette University Law School, prior to embarking on a successful 46-year legal career in White River Junction and Norwich, and Whereas, on February 10, 1983, Governor Richard Snelling appointed Jack Candon as
the new member from Norwich, marking a legislative milestone as he joined Representative Tom Candon of Rutland (who served from 1967 to 1986) to form the first and only father-son pair to sit concurrently in the General Assembly, and with them served Jack Candon’s cousin, Representative Mark Candon of Proctor (who served from 1983 to
1984), and Whereas, beyond his four years (1983 to 1986) serving in the People’s House, Jack Candon provided distinguished leadership as chair of the University of Vermont’s and Vermont Public Television’s governing boards, and Whereas, a fly-fishing and single malt Scotch whiskey aficionado, Jack Candon died on
December 5, 2023, at 73 years of age, and his survivors include his wife, Marty, and their son, now therefore be it Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:
That the General Assembly extends its sincere condolences to the family of former Representative John C. Candon of Norwich, and be it further Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to
the family of Jack Candon.
