Bennington, Corcoran of Bennington, Durfee of Shaftsbury, and Whitman of Bennington Offered by: Senators Campion and Sears Whereas, the origin of Mt. Anthony Masonic Lodge No. 13 dates back to October 7,
1823, when former Governor Isaac Tichenor presented a petition to the Masonic Grand Lodge of Vermont for the chartering of a new Lodge in the Town of Bennington, and Whereas, the Masonic Grand Lodge of Vermont viewed this petition favorably and almost immediately, on October 8, 2023, granted the former Governor’s petition, and Whereas, the formal establishment of the newly created Mt. Anthony Masonic Lodge No. 60 occurred with the Lodge’s initial meeting on June 23, 1824, and Whereas, in subsequent years, anti-Masonic agitation in the United States severely tested the stability of the Masonic Order, and Whereas, the Bennington Lodge survived this turbulence, and, on January 10, 1849, it was reorganized as Mt. Anthony Masonic Lodge No. 13, and Whereas, on August 16, 1887, Bennington Battle Day, employing the ancient Masonic form, members of Mt. Anthony Masonic Lodge No. 13, including Masonic Brother and former Governor Hiland Hall, along with several members of the Masonic Grand Lodge of
Vermont, laid the cornerstone of the Battle of Bennington Monument; and a century later,
on Bennington Battle Day 1987, Lodge members and staff from the Division of Historic Preservation reenacted the original ceremony, and Whereas, on Bennington Battle Day 1911, and as part of the sesquicentennial celebration of the granting of the Bennington Town Charter, the membership of Mt.
Anthony Masonic Lodge No. 13 laid the cornerstone for a new Lodge headquarters and Masonic Temple at 504 Main Street, and Whereas, for 200 years, Mt. Anthony Masonic Lodge No. 13 has continued as a civic-
minded, fraternal organization in the Bennington community, now therefore be it Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:
