1 Statement of purpose of bill as introduced: This bill proposes to designate
2 April 10 as Ken Squier Day.
3 An act relating to the designation of Ken Squier Day
4 It is hereby enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Vermont:
5 Sec. 1. FINDINGS
6 The General Assembly finds that:
7 (1) Ken Squier was born on April 10, 1935. As the longtime owner of
8 pioneering Waterbury radio station WDEV, he created the multiple-station
9 Radio Vermont Group. Ken Squier founded the Thunder Road International
10 Speedbowl in Barre and left both broadcasting and auto racing legacies.
11 (2) These combined passions resulted in his role as a founding father of
12 radio’s nationally distributed Motor Racing Network, debuting flag-to-flag
13 network television coverage of the Daytona 500, and announcing numerous
14 national telecasts of motor car races, and he was the first journalist inducted
15 into the NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) Hall of
16 Fame.
17 (3) At WDEV, he cohosted the Saturday flagship program, Music to Go
18 to the Dump By; the station aired live coverage of high school sports and other
19 community events; and in 2011, WDEV provided all-night reporting during the
20 onslaught of Tropical Storm Irene. In addition to motor racing and VT LEG #373138 v.1

1 broadcasting activities, Ken Squier, who died on November 15, 2023 at
2 88 years of age, chaired the Vermont Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors
3 and was an admired community leader.

5 § 378. KEN SQUIER DAY
6 The 10th of April is designated as Ken Squier Day.
7 Sec. 3. EFFECTIVE DATE
8 This act shall take effect on passage.
