6 Statement of purpose of bill as introduced: This bill proposes to define
7 “application fees,” which existing law prohibits landlords from charging to
8 prospective renters of residential property.
9 An act relating to residential rental application fees
10 It is hereby enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Vermont:
11 Sec. 1. 9 V.S.A. § 4451 is amended to read:
12 § 4451. DEFINITIONS
13 As used in this chapter:
14 ***
15 (11) “Application fee” means any fee charged as part of a rental
16 application or rental application process, including management fees and fees
17 charged for any inquiry into, or history or report on, a prospective tenant’s
18 background, credit, income, criminal activity, past evictions, rent payments,
19 tenancy, or employment.
