Manchester Offered by: Senators Campion and Sears Whereas, the vision and mission of The Wilson House in East Dorset is to serve as a special destination for persons in recovery and as a welcoming memorial that defines the life of William G. (Bill) Wilson, a cofounder in 1935 of Alcoholics Anonymous, and Whereas, in 1852, Ira Cochran, a local marble entrepreneur, opened a new hotel in the village of East Dorset; in the late 1800s, the Wilson family assumed ownership of the property; and on November 26, 1895, Bill Wilson was born on the premises, and Whereas, in 1986, Ozzie Lepper purchased the then-deteriorated structure, and in 1988,
the building was opened to the public as The Wilson House, a hotel, conference center, and celebration venue that is recovery-focused and alcohol-free, and Whereas, The Wilson House is an internationally recognized destination for those in
recovery, welcoming thousands of guests annually, and Whereas, in 1992, The Wilson House was placed on the National Register of Historic Places, and Whereas, Time magazine recognized Bill Wilson as one of the “100 most influential people of the 20th century” for having created a program that has saved and continues to
save millions of lives worldwide in the 21st century, and Whereas, Bill Wilson and his wife, Lois, chose to be buried in the East Dorset Cemetery because it was the community they always considered home, and Whereas, on the weekend of June 3, The Wilson House will celebrate its 35th Anniversary, marking a special milestone, now therefore be it Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:
That the General Assembly congratulates The Wilson House of East Dorset on its 35th anniversary, and be it further Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to
The Wilson House in East Dorset.
