8 Statement of purpose of bill as introduced: This bill proposes to create a
9 permanent, full-time Americans with Disabilities Act Coordinator position
10 within the General Assembly. The coordinator would oversee the provision of
11 reasonable accommodations to General Assembly staff and members of the
12 public who visit the State House and other legislative buildings. The
13 coordinator would also be responsible for working with relevant parties to plan
14 and oversee accessibility-related improvements to the State House; to develop
15 and implement practices and procedures to improve access to the State House,
16 other legislative buildings, and legislative activities; and to provide training to
17 General Assembly staff related to accessibility and the provision of reasonable
18 accommodations. The bill appropriates $150,000.00 for fiscal year 2024 for
19 personal services related to the coordinator position and expenses related to
20 providing reasonable accommodations.
