6 Statement of purpose of bill as introduced: This bill proposes to designate July
7 2 as Vermont Republic and Emancipation Day, which would be a legal
8 holiday, and to make designated State-owned historic sites free to the public on
9 that day.
10 An act relating to designating Vermont Republic and Emancipation Day a
11 legal holiday
12 It is hereby enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Vermont:
13 Sec. 1. 1 V.S.A. § 371 is amended to read:
14 § 371. LEGAL HOLIDAYS
15 (a) The following shall be legal holidays:
16 (1) New Year’s Day, January 1;
17 (2) Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Birthday, the third Monday in January;
18 (3) Presidents’ Day, the third Monday in February;
19 (4) Town Meeting Day, the first Tuesday in March;
20 (5) Memorial Day, the last Monday in May;

1 (6) Vermont Republic and Emancipation Day, July 2;
2 (6)(7) Independence Day, July 4;
3 (7)(8) Bennington Battle Day, August 16;
4 (8)(9) Labor Day, the first Monday in September;
5 (9)(10) Indigenous Peoples’ Day, the second Monday in October;
6 (10)(11) Veterans’ Day, November 11;
7 (11)(12) Thanksgiving Day, the fourth Thursday in November;
8 (12)(13) Christmas Day, December 25.

10 Sec. 2. 1 V.S.A. § 378 is added to read:
11 § 378. STATE-OWNED HISTORIC SITES OPEN TO PUBLIC ON
12 CERTAIN HOLIDAYS
13 Bennington Battle Monument, Mount Independence, Chimney Point,
14 Hubbardton Battlefield, the Old Constitution House, the Eureka Schoolhouse,
15 and Ethan Allen Monument shall be free to the public on Vermont Republic
16 and Emancipation Day.
17 Sec. 3. EFFECTIVE DATE
18 This act shall take effect on passage.
