8 General Description:
9 This bill addresses historic preservation activities.
10 Highlighted Provisions:
11 This bill:
12 < directs the State Historic Preservation Office to conduct a statewide public
13 awareness media campaign; and
14 < makes technical changes.

23 Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
24 Section 1. Section 9-8a-203 is amended to read:
25 9-8a-203. Office duties.

26 The office shall:
27 (1) secure, for the present and future benefit of the state, the protection of

28 archaeological resources and sites which are on state lands;
29 (2) foster increased cooperation and exchange of information between state authorities,
30 the professional archaeological community, and private individuals;
31 (3) in cooperation with federal and state agencies, local governments, private
32 organizations, and private individuals, direct and conduct a comprehensive statewide survey of
33 historic properties;
34 (4) maintain an inventory of the properties described in Subsection (3);
35 (5) identify and nominate eligible property to the National Register of Historic Places;
36 (6) administer applications for listing historic property on the National Register of
37 Historic Places;
38 (7) prepare and implement a comprehensive statewide historic preservation plan;
39 (8) administer the state program of federal assistance for historic preservation within
40 the state;
41 (9) advise and assist, as appropriate, state agencies, federal agencies, and local
42 governments in carrying out their historic preservation responsibilities;
43 (10) cooperate with federal agencies, state agencies, local agencies, private
44 organizations, and individuals to ensure that historic property is taken into consideration at all
45 levels of planning and development;
46 (11) provide, with respect to historic preservation:
47 (a) public information, including conducting during calendar year 2025 a statewide
48 public awareness media campaign to educate the public about the importance of historic
49 properties in the state and the benefits of preserving those historic properties;
50 (b) education;
51 (c) training; and
52 (d) technical assistance;
53 (12) cooperate with local governments in the development of local historic
54 preservation programs;
55 (13) consult with appropriate federal agencies with respect to:
56 (a) federal undertakings that may affect historic properties; and
57 (b) advising and assisting in the evaluation of proposals for rehabilitation projects that
58 may qualify for federal assistance;

59 (14) perform other duties as designated under 54 U.S.C. Sec. 302303; and
60 (15) perform other duties as designated by the department and by statute.
61 Section 2. Effective date.
62 This bill takes effect on May 1, 2024.
