8 LONG TITLE
9 General Description:
10 This resolution recognizes all veterans who served during the Vietnam War, regardless
11 of duty location.
12 Highlighted Provisions:
13 This resolution:
14 < pays tribute to all military personnel called to active duty during the Vietnam War;
15 and
16 < declares that the state of Utah will no longer recognize the term "Vietnam era
17 veteran" and will instead use the term "Vietnam veteran" to describe those that
18 served during the Vietnam War, regardless of duty location.

22 Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
23 WHEREAS, it was over 50 years ago, on March 29, 1973, that the United States
24 withdrew its last 2,500 troops from the battlefields of Vietnam and, since the end of that war, a

25 generation of Americans has come of age and come to understand its significance and the
26 heroic contributions and sacrifices of those who served;
27 WHEREAS, the Vietnam War was one of our nation's longest wars, with the first

28 American soldiers arriving in the 1950s and the last Americans evacuated from the United
29 States Embassy, with the fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975;
30 WHEREAS, like other wars, the Vietnam War was a difficult experience for all
31 Americans, especially service members and their families;
32 WHEREAS, the United States Code defines "Vietnam era," for purposes of benefits, as
33 being November 1, 1955, to May 7, 1975, for veterans who served in the Republic of Vietnam
34 during that period or August 5, 1964, to May 7, 1975, for veterans who served outside the
35 Republic of Vietnam during that period.
36 WHEREAS, members of the Armed Forces who served bravely and faithfully for the
37 United States during the Vietnam war were repeatedly targeted with shameful attacks as the
38 result of decisions that were beyond their control;
39 WHEREAS, like so many others who answered the call to serve throughout the
40 centuries, our Vietnam Veterans are inspiring reminders of the patriotism, spirit, and courage
41 of all who serve in our nation's Armed Forces:
42 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah pays
43 tribute to the United States military personnel called to active duty between November 1, 1955,
44 and May 15, 1975, whether in-country, in-theater, or deployed elsewhere in support of
45 operations in Southeast Asia.
46 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the state of Utah will no longer recognize the term
47 "Vietnam era veteran" and will instead use the term "Vietnam veteran" to describe those who
48 served on active duty in the United States Armed Forces at any time during the period of
49 November 1, 1955 to May 15, 1975, regardless of duty location.
