RESOLUTION
Recognizing the 100th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic
relations between the United States and Ireland.
Whereas, a century ago, on October 7, 1924, Timothy Smiddy presented his
credentials to President Calvin Coolidge, becoming Ireland's first
Minister Plenipotentiary to any country in the world;
Whereas, following the Irish people's arduous journey to securing their
independence, the United States was one of the first countries to
recognize the fledgling Irish state earlier that year;
Whereas it is estimated that over 6,000,000 Irish people have emigrated to the
United States since 1820, creating a remarkable and inseparable cultural
link between the 2 countries;
Whereas the great friendship and bonds of kinship between the peoples of the
United States and the island of Ireland, reflected in the centenary of
diplomatic relations, underpinned the contribution of the United States
to peace in Northern Ireland, specifically the achievement of the 1998
Good Friday Agreement;
Whereas the Congressional Friends of Ireland, founded in 1981, remains a
critical voice for peace on the island of Ireland, and bipartisan
support in Congress has continued to deliver progress toward peace and
reconciliation;
Whereas the establishment of diplomatic relations has allowed the United States-
Ireland economic relationship to flourish, with bilateral trade and
investment totaling $1,000,000,000,000 annually and with Ireland now the
ninth-largest source of foreign direct investment in the United States;
Whereas the cultural and educational links between our peoples have grown over
time and deeply enriched that relationship;
Whereas over 30,000,000 Americans, nearly 10 percent of the population, claim
Irish heritage; and
Whereas the United States and Ireland will continue to strengthen their
diplomatic relationship and promote their shared values of freedom,
democracy, and rules-based international order: Now, therefore, be it
Resolved, That the House of Representatives--
(1) recognizes the 100th anniversary of the establishment
of diplomatic relations between the United States and Ireland;
(2) reaffirms its support for peace and reconciliation on
the island of Ireland;
(3) supports the continued strengthening of relations
between the United States and Ireland, including the mutually
beneficial economic relationship; and
(4) recognizes the enduring people-to-people ties between
the United States and Ireland, and supports efforts to sustain
these into the future.
