The Senate of the State of Texas honors the life and legacy of Chancellor Emeritus Lamar Gene Urbanovsky, who passed away on July 24, 2025, at the age of 78. Born on September 21, 1946, in Bryan, Texas, Lamar was the first in his family to earn a college degree, obtaining a bachelor's in industrial distribution and a master's in architecture from Texas A&M University. He married Darlene Fillip in 1969 and was a devoted father to his daughter, Lynette. Lamar's career in higher education began at Texas A&M, and he later joined the Texas State University System in 1973, eventually serving as chancellor from 1989 until his retirement in 2005. Under his leadership, the university system experienced significant growth, including the integration of the Lamar University System and over $1 billion in construction projects, while expanding academic programs and maintaining affordability for over 69,000 students.
In addition to his administrative roles, Lamar Urbanovsky contributed to various boards and committees, including the Council of Presidents and Chancellors and the Texas Higher Education Formula Advisory Committee. He was also involved in international educational consulting and local community projects. Proud of his Czech-Moravian heritage, he served on the board of the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas and was a lifetime member of SPJST lodge 39 in Bryan. Lamar was known for his deep spiritual faith and commitment to family, leaving behind a legacy of leadership, service, and generosity. The Texas Senate extends its condolences to his family and pays tribute to his memory through this resolution.
