The resolution recognizes the significance of the grasslands of the Great Plains, particularly highlighting the Lyndon B. Johnson National Grassland in North Texas and the city of Alvord's role as a gateway to this vital ecosystem. The grasslands, which provide essential ecological benefits such as flood prevention, aquifer recharge, and wildlife habitat, have been historically undervalued, with less than 40 percent of the original grasslands in North America remaining intact due to agricultural and industrial development. The LBJ National Grassland, established in the 1930s and named after President Johnson in 1974, spans over 20,000 acres and offers various outdoor recreational activities.

In recognition of Alvord's integral position as a gateway to the Lyndon B. Johnson National Grassland, the resolution designates the city as the official "Gateway to the Grasslands." This designation aims to honor Alvord's contribution to facilitating access to the grasslands and promoting their environmental and recreational benefits. The resolution stipulates that this designation will remain in effect until the 10th anniversary of its passage by the Texas Legislature.
