He married Sue Smith on October 20, 1957, and together they raised two children, Keith and Elaine, and enjoyed a loving marriage that lasted nearly 68 years. Mr. Childress co-founded East Texas Acoustical, a successful ceiling and floor installation company, and was an active member of Woodland Hills Baptist Church, contributing to various building projects.
