This bill amends various sections of the Government Code to increase the amount in controversy for civil jurisdiction in statutory county courts from $250,000 to $325,000. Specifically, it modifies Section 22.004(h-1) to require the supreme court to adopt rules for the efficient resolution of civil actions in county courts where the amount in controversy does not exceed $325,000. Additionally, it updates Section 25.0003(c) to reflect the new threshold for concurrent jurisdiction with district courts, and Section 25.0007(c) stipulates that a jury in civil cases exceeding $325,000 shall consist of 12 members unless otherwise agreed by the parties.
Furthermore, Section 25.0062(b) specifies that the district clerk will serve as the clerk for county courts at law in civil cases where the matter in controversy exceeds $325,000. The bill clarifies that these amendments apply only to civil cases filed on or after the effective date of the Act, with cases filed prior to that date continuing to be governed by the previous law. The Act is set to take effect 91 days after the conclusion of the legislative session.
