Senate Resolution No. 632 honors the life and legacy of Alvin Leon Matthews, who passed away on March 8, 2025, at the age of 77. A lifelong resident of Austin, Matthews was a distinguished athlete, earning a football scholarship to Texas A&I University, where he became an All-American player and a member of the Lone Star Conference All-Decade Team. After serving in the United States Army National Guard, he was drafted by the Green Bay Packers and later played for the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers. Matthews made history as the first African American football coach at The University of Texas and contributed to his community through teaching, coaching, and various successful business ventures.

In addition to his athletic accomplishments, Matthews was a dedicated philanthropist, raising over $1.7 million through his National Association of Professional Athletes Celebrity Golf Classic and serving on the boards of several charitable organizations. He is remembered for his wisdom, strength, and kindness, as well as his devotion to his family, including his two children, Marcus and Kia. The Texas Senate extends its condolences to Matthews' family and honors his memory with this resolution, which was adopted on May 31, 2025.
