Senate Resolution No. 558 recognizes the City of Laredo on its 270th anniversary, commemorating its founding in 1755 by Captain Toms Sánchez de la Barrera as Villa de San Agustín de Laredo. Over the centuries, Laredo has been influenced by various nations, with flags from Spain, France, Mexico, Texas, the Republic of the Rio Grande, the Confederate States, and the United States having flown over the city. Today, Laredo is celebrated as a vibrant cultural hub and a key international trade port, contributing to its status as one of the fastest-growing cities in the nation, supported by strong educational institutions and diverse industries.
To mark this significant milestone, the Webb County Heritage Foundation, along with community organizations, organized a day of festivities on May 17, 2025, featuring local markets, historical exhibits, live music, and a celebratory piñata breaking. The resolution expresses the Texas Senate's congratulations to Laredo's residents, encouraging them to reflect on their achievements while looking forward to a promising future. A copy of the resolution will be prepared as a formal expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
