The Senate of the State of Texas has passed a resolution recognizing the City of Laredo on its 270th anniversary, commemorating its rich history that dates back to its founding in 1755 by Captain Toms Sánchez de la Barrera. Over the centuries, Laredo has been influenced by various nations, with flags from Spain, France, Mexico, Texas, the Republic of the Rio Grande, the Confederate States, and the United States having flown over the city. Today, Laredo is celebrated as a vibrant cultural hub and a key international trade port, contributing to its status as one of the fastest-growing cities in the nation, supported by strong educational institutions and diverse industries.
To mark this significant milestone, the Webb County Heritage Foundation, along with various community organizations, organized a day of festivities on May 17, 2025, at San Agustín Plaza. The celebration featured local markets, historical exhibits, live music, and culinary delights, culminating in a festive piñata breaking. The resolution expresses the Texas Senate's congratulations to Laredo's residents, acknowledging their accomplishments and the city's promising future. A copy of the resolution will be prepared as a formal expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
