The resolution commemorates the 75th anniversary of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Houston, which was founded on June 26, 1950, by Bishop Wendelin J. Nold. The church initially held services at Kashmere Gardens Elementary School before moving to its current sanctuary, built in 1965, which features a distinctive roof design. Over the years, the church has faced and overcome significant challenges, including flood damage from Tropical Storm Allison and Hurricane Harvey, as well as the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these hardships, the congregation has remained resilient and committed to serving the community.
Today, St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church has evolved into a predominantly African American congregation, enriched by the presence of Filipino and Hispanic families. Under the leadership of Father Martin Eke, the parish continues to embody its motto "one family, one love" through various community support programs and civic engagement initiatives, such as hosting a mayoral debate in 2023. The resolution expresses the Texas House of Representatives' best wishes for the church's future and acknowledges its significant role in providing spiritual guidance to the Houston community over the years.
