The resolution honors Chief Russell Martin of the Tonkawa Tribe of Oklahoma, who visited the Texas State Capitol on February 6, 2025. The Tonkawa Tribe, historically rooted in Central Texas, has a rich heritage dating back to the 1880s, characterized by their nomadic lifestyle and strong connections to the land. They played a significant role in early Texas history, engaging in trade with Anglo settlers and providing crucial support during conflicts, including the Cherokee War and the Archives War. Despite their contributions, the tribe faced exile and was forced to relocate to Indian Territory in 1884, with only a few members remaining in Texas today.
Chief Martin has been instrumental in revitalizing the tribe's connection to its ancestral homeland, notably through the purchase of the sacred site Red Mountain in Milam County in 2023. His efforts to raise awareness of the Tonkawa's historical significance were recognized during Tonkawa Friendship Day in September 2024, where the tribe received acknowledgment from Travis County and the City of Austin. The resolution expresses the Texas House of Representatives' respect for Chief Martin and the Tonkawa Tribe, wishing them continued success in celebrating their proud heritage. An official copy of the resolution will be prepared for Chief Martin as a token of esteem.
