Senate Bill No. 2843 mandates a comprehensive study on the effectiveness of the rules and policies implemented by the Parks and Wildlife Department to manage chronic wasting disease (CWD) in cervids. The study will be conducted by several academic institutions, including the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute at Texas A&M University--Kingsville and the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, among others. It will assess the effectiveness of current management strategies, compare them with those of other states, evaluate cervid resistance to CWD, and gather relevant scientific data.
Additionally, the bill requires the department to facilitate public input during the study process by holding a hearing and providing an online portal for comments. A report detailing the findings of the study must be submitted to various state officials by December 1, 2026, and will be made available to the public at no cost. The act is set to expire on May 31, 2027, and will take effect on September 1, 2025.
